Getting a car insurance discount is a great way to save money. Of course, drivers often wonder if the old saying holds true about “you get what you pay for” when it comes to cheap auto insurance. The answer all depends on the type of policy you get and the company you select.
Keep in mind many drivers make the mistake of simply requesting the cheapest car insurance possible and then complain when they find out they do not have additional things such as full coverage, collision insurance, comprehensive coverage or a gap insurance policy. The important thing is to be aware of what you need, ask for what you want and don’t settle for less. Remember if you ask for the minimum, don’t be surprised when that is all you get.
The Nitty Gritty Details
When it comes to getting a car insurance discount for your policy, there are some things you should be aware of. First and foremost be aware of what you need:
- If you ask for the cheapest policy available, you will end up with the state minimum wherever you live. For some states this would be liability, and for others it is PIP or no fault insurance coverage. Not only that but you will only get the very minimum amount of coverage needed. For example, if you reside in Florida and have the minimum amount of PIP car insurance coverage, which is $10,000, once your own medical bills exceed that the rest of the expenses are yours to cover. Keep in mind when it comes to medical bills, this can be a lot of money.
- If your car is financed, make sure you get the coverage needed as required by your lender. If not the finance company will tack on their own policy coverage, which you may not even know about until the end of your loan. Be sure your “cheap car insurance discount” does not fall below what you need to carry to meet your lender’s requirements.
- You can get extras such as collision, comprehensive and gap insurance policy coverage and still get great rates. So when it comes to getting cheap rates and getting what you pay for, you can save money and still have excellent coverage. It’s all about being careful what you specifically ask for when it comes to securing your policy.
Of course, much of getting those low car insurance rates depends upon how you find discounts in other ways. For example, if you are eligible for a military car insurance discount, you should be getting that. Maybe you want to go paperless with your billing and set up auto withdraw for your payments. This and many other little tips can help you save a bundle, as can bundling your policies.
Getting quotes is the best way to get the coverage you need at the low rates you want; all you need to get started is your very own zip code. From there you can get the car insurance discount you deserve.
